1970 Marshall Super Bass 100w w/ Bradshaw CAE SE Crunch "Dookie" Mod #58975

Availability: In stock

$5,995.00

Details

WORKING CONDITION: Excellent. The SE Crunch Mod takes a stock Super Bass / Super Lead to another level. The low end is tightened up, and the midrange control is far more aggressive. This particular amp sounds incredible and can still maintain those Hendrix-style "on the edge of breakup" tones. This is a seriously versatile Marshall.

PHYSICAL CONDITION:
Very Good. Three of the four inputs have been blocked, per the SE Crunch Mod, so there is only one input. The impedance selector has been replaced with a rocker switch for convenience, and back panel is actually on this amp (a rarity for a 56-year-old Marshall). The top left screw on the back panel is stripped; all others tighten down nicely. All of the pots feel great, and the knobs, jacks, and switches are in top condition.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: This listing is for a 1970 Marshall Super Bass 100w with the sought-after Custom Audio Electronics "SE Crunch Mod".

The "SE Crunch Mod" (also commonly called the CAE Crunch Mod or Dookie Mod) is a well-known preamp modification for Marshall amps, developed in the 1990s at Custom Audio Electronics (CAE).

The SE Crunch Mod takes the "crunch" (rhythm) channel circuitry from the CAE 3+ SE preamp and adapts it into Marshall's existing preamp section.

This gives the amp more gain, tighter low-end, smoother yet punchier crunch/overdrive, and a refined "Plexi-style" voice with modern tightness—without losing the core Marshall character.

It became famous as the “Dookie Mod” because Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong used (and still uses) Marshall's modded this way for albums like Dookie and beyond—giving that signature tight, aggressive, chiming-yet-distorted tone. It’s also been linked to EVH-style brown sound approximations and players like Doug Aldrich.

The initials “MG” with the 9/96 (September 1996) date are Martin Golub. He was a key technician and amp modifier at CAE during the mid-1990s. Golub worked directly under Bradshaw and Suhr, learning and performing these mods (including the SE Crunch/Lead circuits) while at the shop in North Hollywood. Many collectors and players specifically seek out “Golub-modded” or “CAE-era MG” Marshalls from that period because of the quality and provenance
